Intended outcome

Intended outcomes are the reason processes exist. So every existing “process” should have an intended outcome that can be clearly identified.

IPAPI Definition

Intended Outcome - The desired output (result, goal or outcome) of a process.

Overview

Processes exist to produce a result. Every process has an output, and that output further signifies the "end" of the process. Every process should have an intended outcome as well - the desired output of the process.

It should be noted that intended outcomes are not necessarily the actual outcomes of a given process. Many processes exist to serve a specific purpose - their intended outcome - yet fail to do so in a consistent and predictable basis. The ability of a process to deliver on its intended outcome is a measure of process quality.

Intended outcomes can also be used to identify the processes in a given organization that does not have existing or complete process documentation. By first identifying intended outcomes, we can then go on to identify the processes that exist to produce those outcomes.
